My daughter is 2 weeks old and she has a white coating on her tongue thats been there for about a week....?
Can formula leave a white coating on the tongue? Or is this thrush? It's only on her tongue no where else on the tongue. Thanks!!

- Its either thrush or she is allergic to the formula you are feeeding her, go see your GP, dont panic though
- ask a health care professional.
- It can be thrush.. quite common in children. (the formula usually would not leave such a residue) Taker her to the clinic for a proper diagnosis... best of luck, she is probally cute at 2 weeks old....
- It sounds like thrush. Easy to take care of.. .just need a anti fungal from your doc! Good luck!
- Im not a doctor but a white coating on a tounge from what I hear is because of germs. Brushing usually gets rid of it. See a doctor and see if I was right.
- Yes milk can leave a white coating on your baby's tongue. I usually take a wet cloth and wipe my son's tongue after every feeding, but you may want to check with your pediatrician to be sure.
- it can leave a white coating,it is not thrush
- I believe if it's just a little milk leftover, it will wipe away and won't reappear till after the next feeding. If it's thrush you need a prescription and you'll have to sanitize or boil the nipples after every feeding.
- could be both. Try wiping her tongue with a clean, damp cloth. if it wont come off, or her tongue looks irritated then it is probably thrush. Take her to the doctor just to be safe. Thrush is easily treated, but can be painful if it gets out of hand. Painful for baby equals no sleep no rest, just constant crying fro you.
- i had this exact problem with my daughter.when i took her for her injections, the nurse looked in her mouth and told me it was thrush and referred me to the doctors who then confirmed that it wasnt thrush at all?!its prob best to get it checked out though.if shes feeding ok and doesnt seem to be in any discomfort then its prob just the formula x x x
- It's probably thrush. Take your finger nail and rub it across her tounge if you see a little bit of blood on your nail then its thrush and you need to take her to the doctor. Formula can also leave this on your baby in the case, you won't get anything but the white on your nail. Hope that helps.
- I use to give my kids a little bit of sugar on their soothers..It helped them.
- Go see her doctor- could be thrush- it happens.... could also be just formula residue...only a doctor can diagnose whether or not its thrush,
- Thrush is a common over growth of yeast. In newborns can be commonly in the mouth. Sounds like thats what your lil one has. She'll be fine just needs a diagnosis and treatment by her pediatrician. Hope all is well
- its NOT thrush. its normal for a formula fed baby to have this coating. it happens cuz of the formula ingrediants adn it is normal. i have a 2 month old and it still happens. relax and enjoy that baby. im sure she is fine
- Don't worry about it, it's the milk. My baby had it until he was about 2 and a half months old. Its perfectly normal. Only be worried if the white stuff has spread to the sides of the mouth. Then it might be thrush, which is a fungal infection of the mouth. But all my friend's babies also had white tongues. Its normal.
- this is def due to the formula milk that she is drinking. My son used to ahev the same , what i used to do is when i bathed, him i used to lightly scrap the whitish thing. of course, u have to do to this gently , u can also used a cotton bud tip to do it...but do it slowly and just a few strokes a day, eventually it will go away. Too much of this coating on the tongue, and the baby wont really drink milk well.
- I had that when i was in 3rd grade, so it can't be the formula unless it in a different case.my tongue was compleatly white. I think it had something to do with dehydration. Im not sure so you should go to the doctor just in case.
- I would guess that she has thrush. My baby had thrush two times, because once they get it they are more likely to get it again. It is not a major thing, but you should defienately call your doctor and get some medicine for it. I used the medicine diflican and it worked great for my daughter.
- Definitely go see your pediatrician. In my daughter's case, it was yeast. She is 13 now and still very prone to yeast problems. At one time, it DID develop into thrush and the purple medicine was icky but helped. Your sweet daughter is very young and should be diagnosed by her Doctor.
- It sounds like thrush. The doctor will give you some meds that will take care of it. It's a yeast infection so go to the doctor tomorrow.
- sounds like thrush
- it is called thrush most babies get it
- Thrush. Take her to the Dr., although it is not serious.
- It could be milk, it could be thrush. I would say that if your baby is only two weeks old, you should go to the MD b/c it is probably thrush as opposed to milk buildup. Also, make sure the nipples you are using are being cleaned well (as in as close to sanitized as you can manage) (most people boil them in water), and you should wash your hands before feeding the baby. This helps cut down on the germs that enter the baby's mouth. A baby's mouth needs to be cleaned every day with a clean wet washcloth. Just wet a small washcloth, and use it wrapped around your finger to reach in the babys mouth and clean around the gums and inside of the mouth.
- Couldn't hurt to have her checked for thrush. If you have been feeding her the same formula consistently without it leaving a white coating, then perhaps it's thrush. If you're trying a new formula, bring the formula to the doctor when you bring the baby in to be checked for thrush. Perhaps some sort of allergy evaluation could be done.
- yea it could be formula but if your worried that its not take her to the doctor to get it checked out
- take her to the doctor it could be thrush
- HI. My daughter had a white coating on her tongue when she was about 4 week old that wouldn't come off. It turned out to be thrush. The pediatrician gave me some anti fungal medicine to give her and in a week it was gone. Hope this helps. cowgirl25
