Over the counter meds for oral thrush?
After a long course of antibiotics for dental problems i have developed thrush on my tongue :( Does anyone know of any meds I could get over the counter in the uk? The dental problem was my root canal giving me alot of pain. Dentist prescribed 5 days worth of antibioics then a higher dose for another 7 days. All the antibiotics didnt work in the end and i am in the process of having it done again. I have got to go back to have the root canal finished at the end of the week but embarrassed to go because of the mess on my tongue :(

- Nystatin, or Canestan tablets, usually just one.
- Try Corsodyl available in a spray, dental gel and mouthwash. Ask your local Pharmacist and I'm sure that they will have an alternative if the above is not available
- Try live yoghurt,it's natural and fairly cheap..
- Thrush can make you very ill. I would be very careful about treating it myself. Nyastatin is the drug they will give you, usually in a rinse. The yogurt or lactobacillious acidolfis works on yeast( it can be bought as milk or as tablets at the pharmacy with out a prescription), but iThrush can make you so sick you have to hospitalized. If you are running a fever - go to the doctor- medical or dental. Both kow how to treat it.
- I'm a dentist. Yogurt! The active cultures in yogurt serve as "competition" to the fungi, and thus reduce fungal populations. There are also various other medications that your doctor (dentist or physician) can prescribe, such as Mycolog troches or Nystatin rinses. Any one will work. Of course, your question makes me wonder: what sort of dental condition necessitated a "long course of antibiotics"? I rarely have a patient on antibiotics for more than 7 days--14 if I have to prescribe them a second antibiotic because the first one didn't work.
- Daktarin oral gel
