Tongue Thrush

Tongue Thrush

Do you have answers to my thrush questions?

I believe I have thrush. My three week old son I believe has it, too, but at the Express Care clinic I took him to today, the doc said "Maybe- not enough white on his cheeks, but some on his tongue... could just be leftover milk." He wrote a Rx for Nystatin, and said to fill it if my son seemed to turn out to have thrush "For sure". My nipples are stinging, but not peeling and with no whiteness, dots or otherwise. I have been putting Nystatin on my nipples (from an Rx when my daughter had thrush) but it doesn't seem to be helping. It only hurt a bit when we were at the clinic, but it's getting worse. It hurts terribly to nurse. Is this thrush, or could it be something else? I should add that my son has also been crying while nursing. Not every session, and not the whole time. Maybe three quarters of the way through, he'll just get FURIOUS, then he goes back to finish nursing. I'm really stumped. I don't know what's connected and what's not. Thanks~ Julian's Mom- I really appreciate the link, now I know more about mastitis, and I know it's not that. There's no heat or pain in my breasts other than the nipples.

  1. it sounds like thrush to me. I would be really concerned about the baby and his response. Ask your pediatrican or gyno.
  2. Try this: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/breast_infection/article_em.htm
  3. go see a doctor for answers It is the best. the people here most likely not doctors they my harm you more than they can help you without knowing
  4. It's pretty common. Go to WebMD and look it up. I'd see the doctor again. Don't suffer. Call them in the am. Good luck.
  5. Leftover milk on his tongue could easily be wiped away with a clean gauze. It sounds as if he has thrush. Get the Rx filled and give it to him. Even if it isn't thrush, it won't hurt him. Continue using it on your nipples and if your baby uses a pacifier, wash it well in between uses.
  6. I know this may seem really silly but i use nappy rash cream with antiseptic cream in it. It's called Bethapan, and it WORKS!, i am pregnant so every now and then i get thrush and it is really painful and annoying, but thats what i use and most of the time i only have to use it once and it clears it up! When it's really bad i use it 2 x a day until i can feel better down there and i just make sure i am generouse with how much i am using, give it a go it might help, it's been like a miricle cream for me. You can put a little on your nipples too and you can use it for bub! Give it a go ya never know. Congrats on your baby boy and i hope you are both feeling better soon!
  7. My son and I suffered for two long months with thrush. I had the same symptoms as you in the beginning and then later it got so bad that I almost gave up breastfeeding. I had shooting pains that went up to my shoulders. The thing with thrush is that both mother and baby have to be treated simultaneously otherwise you'll just keep passing the infection back and forth. With my baby, he had while specks on the inside of his lips that would'nt rub off. If it does rub off then it is milk residue. I recommend you contact your doctor at once and ask her to prescribe medicine for you (once you make sure that it is indeed thrush...also there is lots of information on line). Your baby's nystatin will not help.I tried that initially and then the doctor prescribed nystatin cream for me. That didn't help either. I did some research on line and found out that diflucan helps. My doctor was hesitant. (Read up on Diflucan...its up to you if you want to take it ). But I was in so much pain that I finally went to my Obgyn and she immediately prescribed diflucan and i finally got rid of the infection. I really wish I had taken diflucan much earlier. I remember being in so much pain sometimes after feeding my baby that I couldn't go to sleep. Pls talk to your doctor.
