Tongue Thrush

Tongue Thrush

my 9 week old son has white patches on his tongue, but not thrush??

i have a 9 week old son who was born with a little white patch on the tip of his tongue. i was told by the midwife that this will go away, probably just residue, but last week i noticed a much bigger one in the middle of his tongue. they are not furry, can not be scrapped away and do not change shape - they are just a white patch??? i had the health nurse check it yesterday and she didnt know what it could be, but assured me it wasnt thursh or any fungal infection, and to check it out with my gp, who will do some further tests. i couldnt get to the doctors today, but i will tomorrow, though im anxious to know if anyone has an idea of what they could be?

  1. Sounds like geographic tongue. They call it that because the tongue may resemble a map if there's more than one patch. Sometimes the patch is one spot and then another day, it's somewhere else. Sometimes it's white. Sometimes it's a darker red than the tongue. It's unknown what exactly triggers it, but it's likely allergic in nature. It's harmless.
  2. he is developing taste buds ..if its not thrush ..than thats what it is
  3. Geographic tongue. My niece also had that as a baby - and has continued to have it off and on through out her life. I developed it during pregnancy and still have it off and on. Sometimes it is painful, sometimes not. There is nothing to cure it, though. And it is only a minor nuisance.
